The Taipei Biennial 2016 was inaugurated on September 9, 2016 with the opening of its exhibition Gestures and archives of the present, genealogies of the future, curated by Corinne Diserens, that ran for five months at Taipei Fine Arts Museum as the main venue. Engaging “performing the archives, performing the architecture, performing the retrospective” with the invention of narratives, and embracing artistic trans-disciplinary experimentations and a web of historical resonances or coincidences, the biennial’s five-month long program interweaved exhibitions, performances, screenings, symposiums, conferences, and workshops.
Gestures and archives of the present, genealogies of the future explored new notions of gesture, translation, appropriation, genealogy, heterogeneity, subjectivization, the intolerable, and the pleasurable to foster the invention of an unpredictable common, at a time of universal privatization of the human and nonhuman Earth, and deprivation of the world’s “commons.”
It also probed the museum’s catalytic role in navigating between knowledge systems in societal configurations that take into consideration cultural paradigm shifts. Treating the biennial as a matrix, an organic whole with its various forms, intensities, rhythms, and traces, it proposed reflexive images in relation to artistic productions and practices of thought with a firm grip on historical conditions and realities, which play along with or resist realities to come, or whose advent is impossible.
